Hamza Dewan Choudhury (born 1 October 1997) is a professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder or right-back for Leicester City. Born in England to a Grenadian father and Bangladeshi mother, he began his career in Leicester City's academy and has represented England at under-21 level before switching international allegiance to Bangladesh in 2024.
Early life
Choudhury was born in Loughborough and raised in a Bangladeshi Muslim household. He joined the Leicester City youth system at age seven and maintained a strong connection with his maternal heritage, frequently visiting Bangladesh and later obtaining Bangladeshi citizenship.
Club career
Leicester City & early loans
Choudhury progressed through the Leicester City academy and signed his first professional contract in 2015. He was loaned to Burton Albion twice between 2016 and 2017, gaining vital first-team experience in the Championship. He made his senior debut for Leicester City in the EFL Cup in 2017 and his Premier League debut later that season. His first league start came in April 2018.
He scored his first goal for Leicester in a 3–0 victory over Newcastle United on 1 January 2020. Choudhury was part of the Leicester squad that won the FA Cup in 2021, the Community Shield in 2021, and the EFL Championship in 2023–24.
Watford and Sheffield United loans
In the 2022–23 season, Choudhury joined Watford on loan, where he became a key part of their midfield. In January 2025, he moved on loan to Sheffield United for the remainder of the season to gain more playing time.
International career
England U21
Choudhury represented England at under-21 level, earning seven caps between 2018 and 2019. He participated in the 2018 Toulon Tournament, which England won.
Bangladesh senior team
In 2024, he officially switched his international allegiance to Bangladesh after receiving his passport. He made his debut for the Bangladesh national team in March 2025 in a match against India, becoming the first Premier League player to represent the country. He scored his first international goal during that campaign and was welcomed as a national hero.
Personal life
Hamza Choudhury is of mixed heritage, with a Grenadian father and a Bangladeshi mother. He is married and has three children. Off the pitch, Choudhury is known for his strong tackling style and disciplined defensive work. He has faced disciplinary issues in the past, including fines for offensive historic tweets and a drink-driving conviction in 2023.
