William Denison McKinney (September 12, 1931 – December 1, 2011) was an American character actor and singer known for his distinctive villainous roles in film and television. He is best remembered for his portrayal of the sadistic mountain man in Deliverance (1972).

Early life

McKinney was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After his military service, he pursued acting, studying at the Pasadena Playhouse and beginning a career that spanned over four decades.

Career

McKinney’s breakthrough came with his role in Deliverance, which led to frequent casting in Westerns and action films. He appeared in several Clint Eastwood films including The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Gauntlet. His television appearances included guest roles on shows like Columbo, The Rockford Files, and Murder, She Wrote. Later in life, he also recorded a country music album.

Later life and death

McKinney continued acting until shortly before his death from esophageal cancer in 2011 in San Fernando, California.
