Early life and education

Michael Rickman was raised in London within a single-parent family. His father passed away at the age of 40, and Rickman credits his mother’s advice — “if you are going to do something, do it to the best of your ability — you can do no more” — as a guiding principle throughout his life. His upbringing included exposure to acting, singing and sport. He later moved more than 30 years ago to the village of Medbourne, England, where he has since lived and served in community roles.

Career

Rickman began his public service career when he was asked to stand as a councillor in 2015, despite having never been previously involved in politics. He was elected with a large majority, thanks in part to his broad involvement in village activities. He has held various responsibilities, including serving in a portfolio role and later becoming shadow portfolio holder for Leisure, Culture, Tourism and Economy. As Chairman of the association, he has overseen the transition of the organisation from the RMCA to the RSCA, and has emphasised honesty, respect and support as his key political values.

He has worked in diverse roles prior to politics, including production planner, internal sales representative, menswear shop manager, and partner in a specialist racquet shop. He is a recognised racquet stringer for major tennis championships, an LTA Master Club Tennis Coach, a BHSAI riding instructor, and qualified in aromatherapy massage. In his village of Medbourne, he also founded a lunch club to address loneliness and social isolation among seniors.
