Chwast later became principal at the Pushpin Group and taught design at institutions including the School of Visual Arts and Cooper Union.

His work includes illustrations for magazines like Life and The New York Times, children's book artwork, children’s books, posters, typeface development, and editorial design. His posters and illustrations have been featured in major institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and Cooper-Hewitt.
