Early life and education

Alan Rickman was born in Hammersmith, London, into a working-class family. After the death of his father when Alan was eight, Rickman attended Latymer Upper School in West London on an art scholarship. He later studied graphic design at Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art before switching to acting, training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which he graduated in 1974.

Career

Rickman began his acting career on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and achieved early acclaim in the 1980s. His film breakthrough came in 1988 with the role of Hans Gruber in ‘‘Die Hard’’.
