William Henry Cosby Jr. (born July 12, 1937) is an American comedian, actor, and author. He gained prominence in the 1960s through stand-up comedy and later became a household name for his role as Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–1992). The series was lauded for its positive portrayal of an African-American family and became one of the most popular sitcoms of its time.
Early life and education
Cosby was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Mary Channing Wister Public School and later Central High School before joining the U.S. Navy. Following his service, he attended Temple University on a track and field scholarship.
Career
Cosby began performing stand-up comedy in the early 1960s, appearing in clubs and on television programs such as The Tonight Show. His clean, family-oriented humor made him a popular figure in American entertainment. In 1965, Cosby starred in the espionage television series I Spy, becoming one of the first African-American actors to have a leading role in a network drama. His most notable success came with The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992 and became a cultural touchstone. Cosby also created and produced the animated series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, which ran from 1972 to 1985.
Legal issues
From the mid-2000s onward, numerous women accused Cosby of sexual assault, allegations he denied. In 2018, he was convicted of aggravated indecent assault and sentenced to prison. In June 2021, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction, and Cosby was released from prison after serving nearly three years.
