Evan Roberts
Evan John Roberts (8 June 1878 – 29 January 1951) was a Welsh evangelist and central figure in the Welsh Revival of 1904–1905, one of the most significant spiritual movements in Wales. Born in Loughor, Roberts felt a strong call to ministry, combining fervent prayer with passionate preaching, which helped ignite a nationwide religious awakening.

Early life
Roberts grew up in a Calvinistic Methodist household in Loughor, Wales. After working in the coal mines with his father and serving as a blacksmith's apprentice, he grew deeply committed to spiritual life. His earliest religious experiences included extensive personal prayer and vision-like experiences of spiritual awakening.
Welsh Revival
After attending theological training in Newcastle Emlyn, Roberts began speaking at prayer meetings in October 1904. His messages focused on confession, repentance, obedience to the Holy Spirit, and public profession of faith. These gatherings sparked a revival that saw thousands converting across Wales, with packed meetings and widespread emotional response.
Collapse and Later Years
By 1906, the intensity of his schedule led to physical and emotional collapse. Roberts retreated from public life and entered a period of seclusion. He later devoted himself to private prayer and intercession, collaborating briefly with writer and evangelist Jessie Penn-Lewis. Roberts spent his later years in quiet and prayer until his death in Cardiff in 1951.
